Your Difference Makers

I received a text from a friend who I taught with for 18 years informing me that another teacher we’d taught with had passed away. She had recently retired as a principal and just been blessed with a beautiful grandchild. Luckily, I was able to speak with her in the previous few weeks before she passed away. Oh, how this news made me sad!

During the years we taught together, we would laugh and joke around a bunch!  We shared many of the same kiddos and knew their strengths and struggles. I loved the way she believed in kids - in other teachers - in humans in general! She was such a positive influence! As I began my retirement “side hustle!” and she became a principal, she invited me to come lead professional development at her new school and would recommend me to other administrators. She believed in me and what I was doing!  I can hear her voice simply say, “Hey Cullen! What’s up?” so clearly in my head! Did I tell her thank you and how much of a difference her believing in me meant to me?  I hope she knew that.

When I saw this reprinted article a couple of days ago it reminded me of how much we need to tell people that they make a difference in our lives… before we can’t.

I didn’t write this - I saw it years ago…. I loved it then and want to share it with you now!

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the 'Peanuts' comic strip.

      Here is a quiz.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

      How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These people are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards will tarnish ...Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

So, here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

      Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money or the most awards. They simply are the ones who care the most.

Keli’s Korner Challenge: Spend some time this week letting at least 5 of your people (answers) on the 2nd quiz know how much they made a difference in your life. Do it before you don’t have the chance.
