It Takes Guts!

Recently I listened to an interview of a young, up and coming pop star talking about why she named her new album GUTS. She said that it made her think of people “spilling their guts and that's what her songs were doing.  They were talking about bravery and intuition.”

I started really thinking about my life and the people in my life. What made us brave? What made me gutsy? Was I even this way? So, to make sure I was leaning in the right direction, I looked up the definition of GUTS in the Cambridge Dictionary online:

Guts :1. Bowels: 2. Courage in dealing with danger or uncertainty

Ok… we are going with definition #2.

Let’s focus on the words courage(bravery), danger and uncertainty.  I think there are many occupations that are considered “gutsy!” Our son in law is a policeman. He puts his life on line daily for others and I could never thank him enough (and any other police officer) for what the does. That takes guts! And Firemen!!! That takes guts!!!! So does being an educator. If you have ever been in a classroom with 20+ students at one time teaching a lesson (that is all I have to say) … That takes guts! And so do so many other jobs! The list could go on and on!

I also believe it takes courage and bravery to do some other hard and more uncertain things in life that aren’t jobs or occupations. They are just situations life brings us.

It takes GUTS to:

start over.

ask for help.

learn something new.

take a risk.

say thank you.

celebrate others.

step back.

be in charge.

give back.

help others.

make a change.

know when to quit.

be different.

be alone.

be in a crowd.

grow up.

accept when you are wrong.

learn from your mistakes.

speak up.

keep quiet.

say I am sorry.

be humble.

set an example.

see the good.

have a good work ethic.

fall in love.

stay in love.

live by faith.

Looking at these… I guess I am gutsy for the most part and so are lots of “my people.”  Realistically however, some of these I will continuously need to work on. What about you? What makes you gutsy? This week make a list of things that take guts for you and if something is hard… work on it! Do you have the GUTS?
