What Is Your Word?

The Power Of A Word

Instead of creating endless goals and resolutions, choose One Word to be your driving force for the year. No goals. No wish lists. Just one word.

One Word creates clarity, power, passion and life-change. The simple power of One Word is that it impacts all six dimensions of your life – mental, physical, emotional, relational, spiritual, and financial. Simply put, One Word sticks. There is a word meant for you and when you find it, live it, and share it, your life will become more rewarding and exciting than ever.

-Jon Gordon

The New Year brings about so many resolutions for people. Some of them stick - most of them don’t. Jon Gordan is an author who has written so many great books that I used in my classes, but more importantly, I have taken the lessons to heart and used them in my life. His analogies and stories just make sense to me.

One Word That Will Change Your Life is a book that you need to read! Gordon’s idea to choose a word and stick by it all year is something I knew I could do. So, one year I did it. I took the challenge and it really had me focus daily - it was apparent my attitude was changing. Telling others my word made me accountable - It worked!

After receiving emails and small assignments from Jon Gordon each day for a week, I chose my 1st word - JOY.  It wasn’t hard to pick that word- it’s my favorite. I just needed to find a way to focus daily on it. How would I do that? I had JOY signs up in my house and my classroom so I could see them EVERYDAY. That helped! I had people reminding me in all different ways to help me keep my focus.

In addition to the signs and accountability partners, my life is very faith based and so looking inward at how JOY is presented in the bible is where I started. “Consider it all JOY my brothers, when you encounter various trials…” ( James 1:2)  That is how I looked at everything. When I faced a trial or trouble in my life, I would remember this verse knowing I was becoming stronger. I always have been a person who looked for the good in things, but this made me look harder to find the positive. It became a daily habit and I loved it! Joy was abundant.. and still is!

This year I am doing this challenge again and am trying to choose between two words. I am giving myself until the last week in December to really think about it. I have narrowed it down to two words: Hope and Present.

Hope is a word I love. I felt this word a bunch when I taught. I wanted my kids to have HOPE in themselves and their futures. I have always wanted my family to feel hopeful. I want to exude HOPE in all situations. On the other hand, the word PRESENT keeps popping up in my mind. I need to be more PRESENT and intentional in everything I do. One example is that I want to put my phone away and not feel like it is the center of my universe- it’s not, but sometimes I feel like it is. ! I want to be PRESENT in my conversations with others. I want to be PRESENT in my bible study and faith. There is so much more! I am leaning towards this word because it is more of a challenge. Stay tuned!
