Cleaning Out the Vacuum Cleaner

Do you know what makes me happy?  Well, there’s plenty of stuff, but I LOVE VACUUM LINES! You know what I am talking about?  I love when I am straightening my living room and I vacuum and there they are… the lines! It gives me a sense of satisfaction, plus I know that all the pup hair is up for the moment!

Recently I was vacuuming and I didn’t think it was working.  There were no lines and nothing really was coming up in the clear bin that I dump.  Something was definitely wrong.  I turned off the vacuum and sat down and turned it over.  It was going to need some attention for sure.  I went and got a screwdriver to pull off the main part on the bottom (I am sure there is an official name for that part, but I don’t know it).  After taking off the part, I looked at the mess in front of me.  I had to go get some paper towels and a grocery bag for all the YUCK that I was about to pull out! Also, I needed scissors to cut some string I had apparently murdered and sucked up at some point.  It was seriously so gross!  Dirt, hair, pieces of little stuff - it was all stuck and wedged up in the bottom of the sucky tube thingy.  This was why it wasn’t picking anything up.  It was totally clogged up!

Now this sounds like my house is disgusting. I promise you it isn’t.  We have two big pups and I vacuum a lot! But my vacuum cleaner had surrendered - it was not going to get the job done without help and a good deep cleaning.

This whole experience got me thinking.  My brain gets full of dirt too! I probably need a good cleaning. What does that even mean?

Throughout the year, we have great intentions… exercise, do a new Bible study, get a better job, be a better student, a better parent, just a better person, but things, people or situations cause us to change our minds. We find excuses. The more excuses - the more dirt. It is harder to clean up when things are blocking what makes our life good.

For this upcoming year, instead of making resolutions, figure out how you will keep “your vacuum clean!”  Create the life you envision by cleaning out the dirt on a regular basis - or just not letting it in your life at all.  If something or someone is not good for you, turn the other way.  Be aware of the dirt and grime that stop up the vacuum and prevent the pretty lines in your life! We all want the pretty lines!

Are there things going on in your life that prevent you from seeing the vacuum lines?  What are they?  What do you have to do to clean out your vacuum and how are you going to do it?  Remember YOU are the most important thing you have to take care of and keep clean- YOU got this!
